BELTER FURNITURE

John Henry Belter, considered the finest mid-century American cabinetmaker, established a shop at 40 Chatham Squarein, New York, in1844. Recently arrived from Germany and excellently trained in cabinetmaking and wood carving, Belter worked only in rosewood and what he made was done in an adaptation of the French Louis XV style, now known as Early Victorian.

Belter created a new technique in lamination that steamed from four to 16 layers of wood in "cawls" or molds. The wood was then bent into a variety of shapes and hand carved. Leaves and grapes with graceful trendily motifs were but one of his beautiful designs.

His furniture was so radically different than any of his contemporaries that it became known then, and today, as "Belter furniture." The furniture for which he is best known is his dining room suites which he made for wealthy New Yorkers from 1844 until his death in 1865.

Belter furniture was always made in limited quantities and was expensive. Today, it is considered very rare and valuable.
